Nuno's Guide to Lisbon: Tabernas

The heart and soul of Lisbon’s social life, almost every lisboeta is loyal to their favourite taberna, a space whose warm service often makes it feel more of a second home than a restaurant. There are hundreds across the city, but if you ask Nuno, these are the few he’ll say you cannot miss.

O Velho Eurico
A traditional taberna with a typical Lisbon feel. The second iteration of this long held neighbourhood favourite, O Velho Eurico is busy, loud with Portuguese music, hugely fun, and the nostalgic menu by Zé Paulo Rocha and his young kitchen team is utterly delicious.

Taberna Sal Grosso
A real classic, tucked away in Santa Apolónia on the outskirts of the Alfama neighbourhood. Like O Velho Eurico, Taberna Sal Grosso belongs to the movimento taberneiro, a wave of young chefs reviving Lisbon’s traditional eateries. The service is second to none, the food seasonal, and the atmosphere buzzy. Do not overlook the desserts and turn up early if you are planning on walking in, it’s popular.

Taberna do Calhau
All the charm of a traditional taberna, with an unmistakable flair and an excellent wine list. Led by former architect Leopoldo Calhau from Southern Alentejo, Taberna do Calhau celebrates traditional recipes with a twist.

A Taberna da Rua das Flores
Last but certainly not least, and so successful it stopped taking reservations on its second day of opening. A local institution and the leader of the taberna renaissance. A definite non-negotiable in your itinerary.
